Independent Gaming!

3:50 AM. Lightning is striking the trees outside. I’ve successfully initiated the conversion of Indiegraph to IndependentGaming.net. Which involved not just buying a domain, but changing twitter, setting up new emails, creating an entirely new logo, sorting out the multitudes of passwords and emails…all in all, a good bit of work right there. I’ve switched from using yahoo-based mail services to gmail. It isn’t superior as far as mail goes, but google has a whole other ton of stuff that make it just perfect. Google Alerts and Docs in particular are going to be indispensable. I’m currently working on a bot which scans for certain keywords in twitter and retweets the posts that pop up.

The good news is, I’m back and in my usual whirlwind/burst mode again. It lets me chew through tons of work in a few hours and pop out new ideas by the dozen, something I’ve been lacking of lately. This is mostly due to Dave, at who’s place I’m staying at the moment. Somehow work stops feeling like work when you’ve got a friend to chat away with while you type: and once it stop being work, it becomes enjoyable. For the first time in 1.5-2 weeks I’ve also come up with an idea for my next game.  Nothing big, but I get the sense that it’s doable. After watching Indie Game: the Movie, I’m no longer ashamed of the countless prototypes just lying abandoned on my hard drive: hell, Jon Blow (Braid) was making games for 22 years and ditched way more than I’ve ever done.

Inspiration comes in all forms and from all sources, it would seem. For me, it’s always come from the things I see and hear – vague snapshots and images crystallizing in my mind until *snap* – I have an idea. And then I usually write it down, because usually it’s a mega-massive idea that, while superb, would take way more than me to create. It’s the small ideas that stick and make it big. Small concepts that sort of pop up without trying and refuse to go away.

I also got paid today, which feels very relieving: my home internet has been disconnected. I need to pay up and get it running again. I also have a touchscreen to fix (here’s looking at you, BB Storm). I intend to look into buying a secondhand LCD monitor as well. If there’s enough left over, I’m going to treat myself. As for the game idea, I’ll see if I can get a prototype running this week (I doubt it). At least my schedule is cleared up.
